Determination

Working with struggling students for most of my teaching career has taught me a few things about children and how attitude impacts learning.  I have seen it all!  Smart students that give up on learning, and struggling students that are determined to succeed.

What does it take to be a determined learner?

Here is my list of qualities that children need to possess to be successful:

Responsibility
Realizing that you are responsible for your own learning.

Confidence
Knowing that you have what it takes to learn!

Desire
Having a curiosity and excitement to learn.

Drive
The energy that moves us forward.

Courage
The willingness to take risks and try something new.

What qualities do you think our students need to be determined learners?

  1. I think you summed it up rather well. I have a little adopted Chinese gal in my class who has been speaking English for just a few years. She came to me not even knowing her letters and sounds. Not that fluency says it all, but now she reads 51 words per minute. She is all the things you described. My other little strugglers could use some of what she possesses.

    1. I know Tammy! I wish I could "bottle it" and spray the room with it! Whatever IT is!

  2. LOVE this list ... my addition would be what my Great Aunt Norma called "sticktoitiveness" {perseverance, stamina, work ethic}, that quality which helps us hang in there (even when it's challenging and might seem overwhelming) and go the extra mile (or two).
