Valentine's Day Is...

Valentine's Day Is.
Gail Gibbons does a great job with nonfiction!  You can watch a video of her discussing why she chooses to write nonfiction  here.
Why is nonfiction so important?  Research shows that greater attention to non-narrative texts in the
early grades can help mitigate the difficulty many students encounter with these texts later in school. (Caswell and Duke 1998)  As we shift from learning to read, to reading to learn, we focus on nonfiction texts!
Valentine's Day Is...by Gail Gibbons is a great way to infuse some nonfiction into the holiday!  Here is a booklet that can let your students practice writing nonfiction like Gibbons!  Use her book as a guide.

Happy Celebrating!
