Sailing Over the Edge

One of the articles I read recently was Sailing Over the Edge; Navigating the Uncharted Waters of a World Gone Flat by Kylene Beers.  I highly recommend that you take the time to read it!

One of my favorite quotes from this article was:
"High-stakes tests and packaged learning have created a generation of students who equate learning with finishing, and achievement with a decent grade.  Testing does not improve learning; better teaching does."

Wow!

I agree wholeheartedly.  However, so many times I have heard teachers and administrators say, "You need to know this because it will be on the test."  I have been guilty of the same thing!  The pressure that was felt by the adults was passed on to the students.  No wonder they equate learning to a test!!

What are we doing to children? and teachers?  How can we shift the emphasis from the test to the learning?  How does our language need to change?  How can we foster creativity and prepare children for the test?  Will Common Core State Standards help?

We will have to work on the answers together.

I also relate to her discussion of the many complex skills that students will need to navigate the future.  We will be responsible for teaching these complex skills.

To sail over the edge will require us to leave our comfort zone.  To tackle new problems and not be afraid.  To present material and grade students in a different way.  To change our belief system.

It is an exciting time. It is an uncomfortable time.

Record of Reading App Free!

Take running records on your IPad!

I spent some time with C.C. Bates at Clemson University and wanted to pass along this great App!  The Record of Reading App is designed to provide an electronic form for taking a running record. The app provides embedded formulas for the accuracy rate and self-correction rate (no need for a calculator!), but of course, the teacher does all the coding and analysis. Once the running record is complete, it can be saved in a file or emailed.
Check out the User's Manual for additional details!
Let me know if you try it!

Engaging Kids with Technology

Here's an inspiring portrait from Edutopia, showing how a fifth grade teacher guides students to publish their work.  Nicole Delasio has quite a few video tutorials on Vimeo too!
Here is her list of different resources to spark creativity!  What a great resource!

The CCSS require us to publish digitally and in a variety of ways, even in kindergarten.  Summer is a great time to investigate technology resources and find ideas.

Little Birds Tales
Students can upload illustrations and create stories using their own voice.  Each recording is saved as a video and can be accessed by others!  With a little help, even young children can enjoy this!

Check out these PBS Teacher Innovators!  They were awarded this honor for utilizing technology in the classroom.  They are from South Carolina!  Way to go!

LearnZillion CCSS Math Help

LearnZillion is a learning platform that combines video lessons, assessments, and progress reporting.  Each lesson highlights a Common Core Math Standard for grades 3-9.  There are currently 400 lessons, but the goal is to have over 2000 lessons.  The lessons are created by teachers for teachers!
I love the idea of using it on the IPad!  This is great for individualizing instruction!

Glogs

I found out about Glogs today!  They are online posters that can be used by students to create reports or do assignments.  I found a teacher that is using them with her students in fifth grade.  Here is a link to her Glog!  I love the avatars that each student must create.  The New York Zoo and Aquarium allows you to "Build Your Wild Self".  There is no need to use actual pictures of students, when his/her identity can become animated to maintain privacy.
Managing this technology in public education via the Internet is a great challenge for districts.  I hope that we can figure out how to promote these new and exciting ideas, while protecting students.  Blogs and Glogs, etc., need to be adapted to meet the security needs of school districts.  Classrooms need to change to meet the demands of technology, and students need the opportunity to express themselves in this way.
